I recently decided to start purchasing one or more .999 one troy ounce silver bullion bars per month as an investment toward the future that would not take a big chunk out of my wallet. This month I purchased 3 of them to "start the collection." I was wondering how financially sound it would be to continue the pattern through the next 10 or so years ( providing the price doesn’t skyrocket to near the cost of gold). I figure if all goes as planned, that by the 10 year mark I will have between 200-250 troy ounce bars of silver bullion. I watch the spot price on silver. I know that it is down at the moment, but figure (like the others in the precious metals list) that it will only go up as time goes on. I’m planning on keeping the obtained pieces through the next few decades (unless I could make a significant financial gain by selling it off at some point). It may be small bits of silver bullion here & there compared to some purchases, but I figure it’s both easy on the wallet & economically safe (just in the off chance that the economy takes another dive into what would be the second Great Depression). So what do you think… Good/bad idea? Any tips/wisdom you have to offer are welcome.

I’ve been searching around and most places charge up to over spot per ounce plus tax and s&h or have a huge minimum purchase. I was thinking about purchasing from Ampex, they seem rather cheaper with no minimums. I noticed they sell pure gold shot ant silver grain/shot. Would that be a better route to go, it is a lot cheaper than purchasing bars but then again it doesn’t look at nice! lol. I always hear people suggest to invest in gold and silver, but what about Platinum?

I live in Las Vegas and I need to find the purity of this silver as fast and honest as possible. Do I have to send it off to get it tested? Or is there someplace local where I can take it? The coin shops say they have to send it off to have it tested and I am obligated to sell to them at 80 cents on the dollar. I can accept the 80 cents on the dollar, but I am uneasy about having someone send it off. How trustworthy are these coin and bullion dealers? I need to make my house payment. Please help me.

People invent in precious metals because they have intrinsic value that will remain, even after say a nuclear Holocaust.

While gold/silver have a lot of value, I was thinking that I could probably do better with copper and tin, they are easy to work with, and you can make bronze quite easily with them. I am aware that buying copper and tin is a poor investment decision, and won’t really help me in a survival situation, but what I want to know, is it possible to buy bars of copper and tin (say one or two), and where would I do it?

I say again, I want these bars purely for fun, not as any rational investment. Thank you.

I’m 25 years old, and recently I decided that I needed a hobby. So I came up with the idea to start a coin collection. I’ve been buying U.S. Silver Dollar Eagles (some slabbed some not), old Morgan Dollars, and 90% pre 1964 silver coins (junk silver).

I’ve been going to all of the local coin shops trying to find a dealer that I can trust. Well, today I went to a coin shop that I had never been to before. He gave free appraisals, so I decided to stop in to see what he thought of my collection so far. I explained to him that I was relatively new at this. Upon looking at my coins, he said that I had been overcharged because basically all of my coins were only worth melt value. It was very discouraging.

My question is; what coins should I buy in order to have a collection that I can be proud of? a collection that will hold it’s value? A collection that one day will be profitable?

Should I only buy slabbed coins? which ones? What silver coins should I buy? what gold coins should I buy? He said that I didn’t have any "special" coins? what did that mean?

Here is what I have managed to buy in one month:
slabbed 1986 Silver Eagle MS69
2008 Silver Eagle
1oz silver bullion bar
1 oz silver philharmonic 2008
1902-o Morgan Silver Dollar VG
1902 Morgan Silver Dollar VF
1901 Morgan Silver Dollar F
3oz of pre 1964 90% junk silver
1913 Type1 Buffaloe Nickle
1905 5 piece cent

Can somebody please help guide me in the right direction! Tell me what I should be looking for, and what I should be buying?

Thank You
Are there any books that you would recommend?

I bought a few Silver Eagles and small gram bars on ebay. Thats becomes expensive quick with shipping and mark up, silver would have to double to make it worth while. I was wondering if there was a place to buy 1 ounce bars from a shop or from mints without paying double the value.
