I have a bar of unmarked silver.?
I live in Las Vegas and I need to find the purity of this silver as fast and honest as possible. Do I have to send it off to get it tested? Or is there someplace local where I can take it? The coin shops say they have to send it off to have it tested and I am obligated to sell to them at 80 cents on the dollar. I can accept the 80 cents on the dollar, but I am uneasy about having someone send it off. How trustworthy are these coin and bullion dealers? I need to make my house payment. Please help me.

You’re obligated to sell them at 80 cents on the dollar?
Rip off, sir. Go ahead and google "precious metal assay" ("assaying" is the process of figuring out how much you have). This will give you several business that will do this. You might try, for example, Midwest refineries. 80 cents on the dollar isn’t really going to cut it, sir. You can easily do better.
